Perfect Beat Editorial Policy - Information for Authors
Perfect Beat is a peer-refereed research journal. All submissions will be sent to (at least) two referees for assessment. All submissions should be submitted in double-spaced, word-processed form and should conform to the following style-guide.
Submissions not conforming will be returned to the author.
Quotations: all quotations of fewer than 25 words length should be inserted in text in DOUBLE quotation marks “like this”, All Quotations of more than 25 words (or more than one sentence) should be separated from the preceding line, indented and be in italics (without quotation marks).
References: Perfect Beat uses a modified form of the Harvard style of referencing. Quotations should be referenced thus: (Ryan, 1996) – when a whole work is being cited; or (Ryan, 1996:24) – when a specific passage is being cited.
The full reference should then be included in a collated end section entitled ‘Bibliography’, These are the formats to present Bibliographic information in:
Books: Ryan, K (1996) Reggae Echoes, Toronto: Miller and Co
Journal articles: Whiteoak, J (1995) ‘Hawaiian Music and Jazzing’, Perfect Beat v2n3, July
Press articles: Lauren, R (2000) ‘Country Splash’, Newcastle Herald 19 April
Endnotes: should be in standard numerals (ie 1,2,3,4), at end of text and before the bibliography, and should not include bibliographic information unless additional to material mentioned in the text.
Personal Communication should be referenced: (p/c to the author, 17 June 2004
Emails should be referenced: (email to the author, 17 June 2004)
Interviews should be references : (i/v with the author, 17 June 2004)
Website references should be referenced in the text, or in footnotes, not the bibliography. Full URL (Uniform Resource Locater - “http”, for example) information and the date the site was accessed is required. For example:
http://www.dcms.mq.edu/content/pbeat/default.htm, accessed 24 May 2005
Recorded music (ie records, cassettes, CDs) + films, TV programs and CD-Roms: put title in italics and follow with date of release (at first mention) in brackets – ie The Delta’s Tomorrow (1996)
Acronyms, Abbreviations and cultural-specific references: Perfect Beat is an international journal and all acronyms should be spelt out when first used and cultural specific references explanined.
Bibliography
No use of the symbol “&” to separate authors in bibliography – use “and”.
“eg” is used.
No dots between letters in abbreviations and acronyms – US not U.S., for example
Similarly no dots in eg or ie
References
Between references in lists with multiple references (eg Evans 2001, 2003a, 2003b) use commas. Where the authors are different use semi-colons. Where the authors are Unattributed use semicolons (as we are assuming a set of different authors). Where a list occurs in parentheses, a comma should separate author and date as in (Evans, 2001, 2003a, 2003b).
Other
An ellipsis consists of a space, three dots then another space .
Commas and endnotes come after brackets: ‘brackets’, then ‘another’.
Website addresses should not be underlined – do not format these as clickable URLs
Major headings are bold caps
Minor headings are bold
Styles of music are not capitalised – eg hip-hop, rock rather than Hip-Hop, Rock.
