This unit will look at the social and cultural connections between various articulations of popular passions and/or socio-political rebelliousness and the style, identity and marketing of popular music.
The unit will include topics such as Dance music and Rave culture; the advent of Rock and Roll; Reggae and Rastafarianism in Jamaica; 1960s Hippy Counter-Culture; 1970s Punk Rock; and Rap and Hip Hop in the 1980s and 1990s.
