Contemporary Dance 1 teaches fundamental movement principles in a 'dance class' mode of instruction. Using a wide variety of dance styles students will become familiar with such principles as weight, rhythm, flow, succession, extension, relation to the floor, movement memory, dance creation, choreography, dancing in a group, partner dancing, energetic control and movement genesis. While this unit aims to improve dance skill and fitness, its main ambition is to discover each dancer's unique and individual movement style.

Students will also be expected to articulate, describe and analyse their own practice in written assessments.

Previous dance experience is not essential.
