The DCMS/BCA Student Compilation CD Launch and Visual Art Ex=hibition is an initiative that began in 2004. This annual event is designed to nurture and develop an artistic community (or scene) within the student body at Macquarie, its alumni and within the broader artistic community in Sydney. The first compilation CD launch and visual art exhibition took place on the 11th of August 2004 at the SAM bar at the uni. 200 people attended this event. The CD was sent out as a ‘sampler’ to various members of the Australian and international music industries. A promotional DVD featuring the student’s performances at this event, and the visual artist’s work, was manufactured and distributed to the wider student body and to the industry in order to initiate Macquarie student’s artistic careers. The CD received major airplay on 2SERFM (107.3) and FBi FM (94.5).
Many of the artists and bands that were involved in this event have subsequently made an impact on the music industry. Dion Jones & The Filth is a band that formed through DCMS and this band sold out the Transit Lounge at the Metro (350 capacity) in Sydney for the launch of their debut album (MGM) on Friday the 8th of April 2005, they were selected to showcase at Australian Music Week in Melbourne in February 2005 (an event associated with promoter Michael Chugg), and a representative from the band has received funding to travel to Canada, New York, London and Rome for various music related conferences and in order to try and license this album to labels in the US and the UK. The band will also be touring in the UK in late 2005/early 2006. For more info check out: http://www.dionjonesandthefilth.com
DCMS Record’s first student CD release and launch involved the live dub reggae band Flan Atlantic. Flan Atlantic won the Macquarie University band competition in 2004 and because of this fact, DCMS recorded, marketed and released a debut EP for this band. This EP was successfully launched at the Hopetoun hotel in Surry Hills, Sydney on Thursday the 12th of May 2005. This show was produced by DCMS Records in conjunction with the artists and various student volunteers. This is the band’s bio>>>
Guitar/Bass/Vocals : Toby Paramore
Guitar/Bass/Vocals: Andrew Elston
Beats: Jim
Flan Atlantic kicked off their thus far salubrious and successful career forming a week and a half before the 2004 Uni band comp at Macquarie University.
They won the heat, went to the next round then won again, granting them the honour of the opening slot at Macquarie's inaugural conception day (the end of semester parties to end all parties - name taken from the alleged conception date of Lachlan Macquarie)
Since that date, ‘The Flan’ have rocked out shows, gigs and parties, pubs, clubs and bowlos.
They’re planning a mid year tour, have had offers of assistance with the recording of their first studio album and are generally enjoying getting out there and doing it for the fans.
To date, they’ve shared stages with bands like ; The Herd, Morganics, The Bird, Endophin, After the Fall, Skulker, 28 Days, Alphabetics, Dirty Harry, Porcelain, The Outfit and The Prickly Bits at a variety of these parties, jams and gigs.
What do they sound like? A mash up of dubb-y reggae and groove based melodic hip-hop with other beats and pieces mixed in, the odd dash of brass and occasional guest performer thrown in for good measure.
The next DCMS/BCA student compilation CD launch, visual art exhibition and live dance performance event is currently being organized and this year the plan is to take the event out into the Sydney ‘scene’ in that it will take place at the Transit Lounge at the Metro in September.
