During the Late 19th and Early 20th centuries there were a series
of international vogues for music, songs, stage shows, films
and novels that presented exotic images of non-western locations.
The vogue for Hawaiian music and dance that began in the early
1900s (and persisted through to the 1950's) Helped establish
the 'South Seas' as a popular setting for romantic ballads.
Many songs on Hawaiian and South Seas topics were written in
Europe and North America and entered international repertoires.
One subset of this international vogue was a series of songs
written in Australia between the 1920's and 1950's that represented
Australian locations, especially those of Queensland's coast
and the islands of the Coral Sea, in archetypically exotic terms.
Like many Australian songs from the pre-pop and rock era of
the early 20th Century, these have disappeared from the repertoire
of contemporary performers and have dropped off the contemporary
cultural map. This CD has been produced to re-animate a number
of these compositions.

George Toofie Christian
Pilli
Lornga N.I., Songs from Norfolk Island |
 |
 |
| |
In the early 1990s Toofie began writing songs that reflected
aspects of Norfolk Island's history. His musical style draws
on country, pop, folk, blues and hapa haole -style Hawaiian
music. The title of this CD refers to Toofie's life-long residence
on and committment to Norfolk Island ( pilli lornga meaning
'sticking with'). This is Toofie's recording debut, and the
songs attest to the uniquenes=s, diversity and resilience of
contemporary Norfolk Island culture. |

Herb
Patten
Born an Aussie
Son
|
| |
 |
 |
Herb Patten is Australia's leading Aboriginal gumleaf player.
In addition to playing leaf on this album, he sings from his
repertoire of mixed language songs, country music, rock 'n'
roll, jazz and gospel. These genres evoke special cultural and
communal meanings for Koori people in urban settings as well
as far-flung communities. Herb's CD provides a unique insight
into this repertoire as well as demonstrating some of the most
virtuosic gumleaf playing recorded to date. |
